Food storage is not as easy as many people think. Storing food is a domestic skill that involves thorough thinking and planning. Storing food should be done properly to avoid wasting the food and money. People who are new to this kind of domestic skill commit lots of mistakes. Here are some of their common mistakes and how do you avoid them:
• Not storing enough spices and condiments.
When you are storing food, make sure that you also include common condiments and spices such as salt, oil, pepper, sugar, soy sauce, vinegar and many more. Storing spices and condiments will save you time when you need to whip up something in a rush. Remember, that even if you have pasta and canned sauce, your spaghetti will taste different if you run out of spices to add taste and flavor to your dish.
• Storing food that you do not eat.
What is the purpose of storing food that you and your family do not eat? Avoid piling your cupboards with foods that you do not eat; these foods will just pass their expiration dates and will just end up in your trash bins. So before you go shopping, make a list of foods that you and your family like to eat.
• Not having a list. When storing food, make sure that you have a list of what you need to buy before hitting the nearest supermarket. With a list, you are sure to remember to buy everything that you need and it will prevent you from buying redundant foods.
• Ignoring the nutritional values of the foods that are stored. A lot of people take for granted the nutritional values of the foods that they store. It is very important that you consider the nutritional value of the foods that you eat. If you do not read labels, you may end up eating junk foods and empty calories. Aside from taking note of the number of calories, read the amount of preservatives contained in these foods. Foods high in sodium and preservatives may result to health problems later on.
• Forgetting to rotate stored food. When storing food, it is important to consume them before they expire. Get food from your storage and replace them with new stocks. Eat first those who are nearing their expiration dates. Put your newly-bought food at the back of your cupboard.
• Using poor quality food storage products. It is very important that you use durable containers when storing food. When storing leftovers, use airtight containers. When storing grains, make sure that the containers are sealed to keep pests and insects away.
• No food variety. Having a wide variety of food in your cupboard and refrigerator is necessary for you to be able to prepare well-balanced meals. Store fruits, vegetables, grains, meat, dairy, etc. to meet daily nutritional requirements.
• Not reading expiration dates. Label food containers and read expiration dates to avoid eating spoiled goods.
• Not preparing for emergencies. Emergency situations should be considered when storing food. Calamities can happen anytime, so be sure that you have stored foods during these times. In Utah, food storage is one of the best ways of being emergency-ready.
