EFT is a very powerful technique that has helped many people resolve problems in their life such as phobias, pain, post traumatic stress etc. However people are often taken aback by the fact that when they do EFT, they are asked to focus on the problem and state it out aloud.
In fact it is one of the most commonly asked questions about the technique, “Why do we focus on the negative when we tap?”
It is no wonder people often seem highly conce
ed that they are asked to put their attention on what can be extremely negative thoughts and, as if that wasn’t bad enough, they are asked to repeat them over and over again.
This idea seemingly goes against the message that is conveyed by so many of the self-help books, gurus and articles commonly available today. You need to put your attention on what you want and avoid thinking about what you do not want. The message being clearly conveyed is that to focus on the negative and hold those thoughts in your mind is literally an invite for negative events to occur.
Well, it is true that focussing on the negative is not a good thing, however avoiding what is already there isn’t the best way to begin to get your mind truly focussing on the positive thoughts. The reason for this is because the negative is still affecting you at some level. What occurs in EFT is that by focussing on the negative and then tapping on the acupoints, the power is literally taken out of the negative statements. So effectively, they no longer resonate with you, they become just words that really do not relate to you. When this happens you find that the mind really loses interest in thinking those thoughts. Therefore it becomes easy to focus on the positive.
