Sedatives are often used in the field of dentistry to make the patient sleepy so that he or she doesn't experience any pain during the procedure. Sedatives are a good choice if the patient has severe dental phobia or anxiety problems. Some of the common sedatives used in the field of dentistry include anti-anxiety drugs, tranquilizers, and anesthetic agents. Nitrous oxide is the most popular sedative used by dentists. Other sedatives are administered through the vein or orally in the form of tablets.

Sedation is a kind of material to ease a patient. A cosmetic dentist will usually offer a gas service to help with sedating a patient. In other cases a medication that will be used once to sedate the patient. Also, those who find it hard to stay still in one position can also choose to be sedated so it would be easier both for the patient and the dentist. Longer, more complicated and more extensive treatments that require long hours and treatment which cause heavy pain on patients are also best when administered with sedatives. In Sedation dentistry, the procedure may be administered within a fewer visits or even in a day in some cases. The sedation method will vary by every person.

Sedated cosmetic dental work may be necessary if you have been unfortunate enough to be involved in a road accident or perhaps a sporting accident and have suffered severe mouth trauma. Tooth decay caused due to the toxins in the drug for those people who have had a bad drug habit and have spent a life time not caring for their own teeth. Perhaps they may need to have dentures or implants put in.

Side effects include:

Over-sedation: The most important risks associated with oral sedation are mostly related to the risk of over sedation. Reaching a deeper level of sedation than the desired one can be dangerous especially for certain groups of medically compromised patients.

Respiratory depression: Depression of the respiratory function is a potential side effect of the sedatives drugs used in sedation dentistry. The risk is much higher in case of over-sedation, if the patient falls into deep sedation. It puts you at risk for not getting enough oxygen to your brain.

Haematoma formation: It is a localized swelling that may occur sometimes at the site where the vein was punctured as a result of blood leaking from the blood vessel into the subcutaneous tissues.

Benzodiazepines can cause amnesia for the time surrounding their administration. Nitrous oxide can cause nausea and vomiting. Ketamine can cause nausea as well as vivid hallucinations that are often frightening. Propofol can result in marked depression of your breathing rate. Some side effects are rare but serious. Halothane can trigger inflammatory hepatitis.

Because of various sedatives available, your doctor will make a decision that suits your needs. The sedative that works for one person for a specific procedure might not work for you. You should discuss any drug allergies you have before undergoing a procedure. Sedation should only be performed by a qualified medical professional experienced in working with the drug and who understands its potential side effects.
