Rhinoplasty is one of the most commonly performed procedures in the US. It is popular with both men and women. There are two approaches to perform this plastic surgery – open and closed. The approach the plastic surgeon selects for you depends on how much correction has to be made and his individual preference. The open technique would involve an additional incision in the columella apart from the other incisions inside the nose.

Cosmetic Nose Surgery – Frequently Asked Questions

Q1.) What is Rhinoplasty Surgery and what can it do for me?

It is cosmetic nose surgery to remold the nose so as to make it suit the rest of the face. Even a small alteration to the nose can improve the way a person looks. The procedure can make your nose bigger or smaller, fix crookedness, modify the shape of the nasal tip, and get rid of a hump. If there is a structural defect in your nose which is making it difficult for you to breathe, this surgery can correct the defect.

Q2.) At what age can I go for this surgery?

Girls are advised to wait till they’re 14 or 15. Boys have to wait one to three years more. There is usually no maximum age limit. An elderly person can have the procedure done as long as she enjoys good health, both physically and mentally.

Q3.) Am I an ideal candidate?

An ideal candidate would have reached the necessary age, be unhappy with the way her nose looks, have practical aesthetic goals from the procedure and be psychologically and physically healthy.

Q4.) Will my insurance cover the costs for the procedure?

If the procedure is performed to improve nasal function, it will be covered. If the surgery is purely for cosmetic benefit, it will not be covered.

Q5.) What is the duration of the procedure?

The typical duration is between one and two hours.

Q6.) Would I have to stay back in the hospital after the surgery?

Rhinoplasty is an outpatient surgery that rarely calls for an overnight hospital stay.

Q7.) Do I have to do chin augmentation in addition to the nasal molding?

A small chin can make a nose look bigger than it really is. That’s why your physician may suggest having a chin augmentation procedure if you want to reduce the size of your nose. A smaller nose achieved with rhinoplasty and a slightly bigger chin would create facial harmony.

Q8.) How much would it cost?

The price would vary with the amount of work that has to be done, where you live and the popularity of your plastic surgeon. Prices may even be different at different parts of the year.

Q9.)What happens after the procedure?

The post-operative period is usually painless. However, you may have to consume pain medication if you feel any discomfort. You may feel some gentle pressure on the nose for close to two hours. Bruising and swelling would be there for about two to three weeks. You would be presentable about a week after surgery by which time your nasal bandage would have been removed.

Q10.)When will the final results be visible?

Though you will notice some improvement within a month after your surgery, the final outcomes would be clear only after a year.
