Time clocks, when introduced into markets such as commercial products, were mechanical devices that used punch cards. These machines were quite crude, and punched or printed days, dates and times onto cards when given to employees.
Though these systems worked very well, it was possible for employees to punch cards for not only themselves, but for their colleagues as well.
An electronic time clock is a sophisticated device which has largely done away with paper cards by either communicating directly with computer based software or via an embedded web server. The smarter time clocks are now capable of more than just the simple recording of employee start and finish time. Advanced time clocks can perform award interpretation functions including rounding, balancing, grace times, and other payroll rules which will be familiar and time consuming for your payroll staff.
Modern day data collection allows flexibility that was once non-existent with a manual process of adding time-sheets and time-cards in a timely fashion. Once the employee data has been collected from a data collection terminal, it is then polled or imported into a time and attendance software system. These labor management systems allow you to track labor hours, job costing, ad compare actual versus scheduled times, giving the information a manager needs on demand. With this information, companies can then organize their workforce to be the most cost effective solution to increase efficiency saving both time and money.
Employee time clocks are used by many organizations to help keep track of employee hours for payroll purposes. The clock systems include standard mechanical time clocks, electronic time card style systems, freestanding polling and memory-based clocks.
Employee computer time clocks comprise systems replacing the punch-card time clocks in industries. Also known as time and attendance systems, they provide numerous benefits to both large and small companies. It is easy to record employee arrival and departure times using a computer time clock. To log in/log out, employees use unique identifiers, such as cards with magnetic stripes or bar-codes, biometric input devices that check fingerprints or hand-prints.
The main advantage of a computer time clock is that it tracks employee time data in a database that helps managers to get easy entry to employee information, plus tools to audit the information for precision. The time clock packages are also a great way to offer scheduled management. This permits supervisors to establish and keep a timetable for every employee, including break times, holidays and whether overtime is applicable.
