Components of a Home Security System

Home security means different things to different people. To some, it means sitting on their porch with a shotgun in their hands. To others, it means installing a home security system to protect their home and family even when they’re not there to do it themselves. The main component of any security system is the detection device. This is what a burglar trips when he breaks in that sends a signal to the control panel to sound the siren or activate the silent alarm. The detection device is usually a sensor placed on the doors and windows; however, some detection devices are lasers that when broken, send a signal to activate the siren. Either device is effective, but sensors usually come with a home security package while lasers are typically considered upgrades that have to be purchased separately.

Another common component of security system is the siren. Some systems do send silent alarms directly to law enforcement, but these are relatively rare. One of the main goals of security systems is to deter crime, which is what a loud siren is intended to do. When a siren sounds, burglars tend to get as far away from the scene as possible, which deters them from continuing to commit the crime. The third main component of a home security system is the control panel. This is how the system is activated and deactivated. All security systems have to have some mechanism that controls the sensors and the siren. Typically, control pads are mounted near the main entrance to the house so the homeowner can turn it on and off as needed as soon as they enter the house or right before they leave it.

The final component of most home security systems is off-site monitoring. A security system is only effective if someone is around to respond to the siren when it is activated. Homeowners can’t be at home all at all times of the day or night to monitor their alarm system. For this reason, most people who get an alarm system installed pay for monitoring by a third party that watches the system 24 hours a day and can summon help even if the homeowner is not physically present at the house.

All of these components of home security systems are designed to work together. Sensors are needed to sound the siren and the control panel is required to turn the sensors on and off. If you are considering getting an alarm system installed in your home, be sure it consists of at least these components so you can be sure your family and home are as secure as they can be.
