Picture a 56 year old woman who recently suffered from a financial setback. Her ex-husband who supported her and two children is now out of work and suddenly she is thrust into a state of panic. Over the years she has suffered from constipation and now because of the stress she is experiencing, bouts of rectal bleeding.
These are my strategies:
Rectal bleeding is a serious thing. Do not hesitate – go and see your medical doctor for a consultation and probably a colonoscopy immediately! Colon problems or colorectal cancer can be detected and treated. Be proactive.
On the emotional level, the colon represents the elimination process – letting go of the past, old ideas or outmoded beliefs and the blood represents the chi or the life force; the amount of energy you have invested in yourself or others. Her belief that her husband is the only source of income is the issue a hand. On a practical level this could be the truth but on a higher level, there are other options which are yet to be seen - scary but exciting! This current experience is an important opportunity for growth and a “way in” to developing trust.
The well-known adage “What is in the way – is the way,” can help you to see that your bleeding rectum and energy leakage toward the past, and fear of the future provide the catalyst to move in a new direction.
One way to help to get healing energy back into the body is to work on forgiveness – forgiveness toward her ex-husband and herself and the choices they have both made. After all, on a higher level, “we set it up this way.”
Forgiveness is not an easy task but the rewards are numerous; more energy in your own body, deeper and lighter meditations and the “space” for change to take place.
On the physical level, let’s look at some of the factors which can be useful to keep the bowels moving and the energy flowing.
Increase green leafy vegetable intake. A good-sized salad at lunch and dinner can work wonders. I like to make a “fully loaded” salad with all sorts of greens, seeds, shredded cabbage and fibrous vegetables. Add oil – olive, flax or other vegetable oils can be useful. Try 2 tablespoons a day – either “straight up” or poured on your salads. Oil coats the intestinal tract so the stool “slips” through more easily.
Add more whole grains into the diet – try some unusual grains like quinoa, millet, amaranth as well as whole rye or brown rice. Make sure your water intake is high – 8 – 12 glasses per day.
You are in the process of developing faith. Repeat the comforting affirmation “I have faith in my future.” Now, start to build a future that is centered on your own gifts and talents. Find a good counselor or strategist who can help you identify your skills and steer you in a new direction. Everyone has something to offer. This may involve school or additional training. You may be eligible for state subsidized education. Keep open to all opportunities. The universe really wants to deliver good to us - we just need to believe it.
