If you will soon be graduating from High School and are interested in health care as a vocation, or if you’ve already been working and are thinking of a life change and would like to work in health care, then perhaps you should consider becoming a Medical Assistant. A medical assisting job is a great entry-level way of getting into the health care industry, and you don’t need a University degree to do it. In fact a recent study by the Medical Assistant Atlas showed that 33% of employers will accept someone who has no formal training and even with no previous experience in the field. So what does a Medical Assistant do? Well they help doctors and other health care professionals to look after patients, and they do this in either a Front Office setting, or by getting involved directly in patient care, depending on their level of experience and training. The kinds of things MAs do in the front office are answering telephones, scheduling patient appointments, maintaining patient records, medical billing where you organize payments from health insurers, and generally all the kinds of things you would expect in a general office receptionist role. Of course vocational training does help your chances of getting a job, and there are many certificate courses which enable you to become a fully qualified medical assistant and these usually take between 9 and 12 months to complete. Qualified medical assistants often also work in the Back Office helping patients directly by taking blood samples, operating specialized medical equipment like EKG machines, and measuring the patient’s vital statistics, like heart rate and blood pressure, on behalf of the doctor. Not only is this a rewarding career, but it also pays well too. MAs can earn up to $30,000 a year – of course the longer you’ve been working, and the higher your level of qualification, then the higher your salary will be. There are hundreds of colleges right across America that specialize in medical assistant training, and most of them have financial aid programs for students as well. And if you prefer learning online then there are plenty of online courses available as well. There's a wide range of setting in which MAs work, from large hospitals, all the way down to the local doctor’s offices. So whether you’re interested in going to school to become qualified, or if you’d like to start a career in this field right away, it’s a rewarding path that can provide enormous satisfaction as you help people with their health on a daily basis.
