I'm sure most if not all of you already know what the concept of resale is, simply that when someone no longer has a use for an item or just tires of it, they bring it to a store to have it sold for them Resale stores can be of the charitable type, where the user brings their items to a store that backs an organization such as Marklund Resale in Wood Dale, IL which supports profoundly handicaped children and the housing of them. These types of stores typically have items that are more "used" in comparison to privately owned resale stores. I'm not taking anything away from the concept of shoping at a charitable store, they're wonderful and you can find some real treasures there. I'm just saying that chances are, you'll find better merchandise at a for profit resale store. The reasons should be obvious. Primarily the cause is money, it's always money. At a charitable store, you'll receive a donation receipt for the items that you drop off. With that receipt you'll be able to then use that amount as a deduction from your taxes. Whereas when items are taken to for profit resal stores, or consignment shops, you will be paid cold hard cash for your used goods. At my particular consignment shop, we offer a 50/50 split on any items brought in. So let's say that you have a set of nice living room furniture that you're getting rid of (you've bought new and expecting it to be delivered in days). Would you like to make $300 now, or the tax savings of $50 and the conce
of having filed the proper forms? Most people will take the cash. That's why for profit stores are gonna have the nice things. And of course, $300 is just an arbitrary amount in regards to value. We often see gorgeous furniture coming in our store selling for far more than that.
Our most common reason for receiving furniture is one of two. Death of a relative or families moving out of state. There are of course the times when we see people with lots of disposable cash simply tiring of the furntiure they have, and they call us to come get it. And that's what we do. We'll come pick up your furniture, give you an estimate of what we feel your merchandise will sell for, then place it in one of our showrooms and market your merchandise on the internet for you. See, the more we get you for your furniture, the more we get for our company. It's a win / win for all involved.
Now I suspect in my explaination of the differences in the types of resale stores, I may have inspired you to perhaps take a look at your local consignment shop. If you've never been in one, I think you're going to be pleasantly surprised at the quality of the furniture that you'll find in these places. In comparison to the furniture being sold today in places like IKEA or Value City where things are made of sawdust and glue with wood grain contact paper, we've got real, solid wood furniture. Again, I'm not taking anything away from those trendy stores. The furniture looks nice, looks real nice, but it simply doesn't last like the furniture made just ten years ago. At my resale store we get pieces from the 50's to current, but we won't even consign things that are made from pressboard. In most cases, particle board furniture will be damaged to the point of being useless after having moved it from location to location. It's just the nature of the product. Where we have stuff here that'll last for three life times. You oughta come on in and have a look at what we have to offer. You're gonna like it.
Our store happens to be located in the northwest suburban town of Arlington Heights, IL just outside of Chicago. We get most of our furniture from the surrounding area and much of Chicago's north shore (talk about disposable cash). That's where we get our nicest consignments. So as you can see, we carry some nice merchandise. You'll be able to get a look at our inventory by checkin out our websites. We try to keep up on the pictures, but occasionaly we get so busy in the store, we fall a few days behind.
So as I see it, not only do you get cash in your pocket by selling your used furniture at a consignment shop, but you get money in your pocket by shopping at resale stores too. Do yourself and your family a favor this weekend. Take them to the resale stores near you. It's cool stuff.
