Refined carbohydrates like bread, potatoes, rice, flour, corn, cookies, cakes etc. are dangerous. Avoid them like the plague. Sodas? Avoid. Slurpies? Avoid! Anything packed with sugar? Avoid, avoid, avoid!
Sounds boring? Well, you can have these treats once in a while, but for everyday, indulge your cravings with healthier choices. Eat whole grain breads, use brown rice, substitute yams for potatoes. Eat fruit instead of cake, take less sugar in your coffee, use sparkling water instead of soda. In a few weeks you will realise that you no longer crave sweets the way you used to. If you crave chocolate (and I always do), eat a couple of pieces of really dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate or chocolate candy bars, and satisfy the chocoholic in you in a healthier way. rnEat healthy, lean proteins. Chicken breasts, and lean cuts of meat are really helpful.
Select fats that are good for you. Olive Oil and Omega 3 fatty acids actually improve the body’s response to insulin resistance. Avoid saturated fats and trans fats.rnEat loads of veggies and greens. Fibre is extremely important since it improves blood sugar control, and it makes you feel full so you do not keep eating. Indulge in delicious salads and stir-fry. rnAll this may sound difficult, but actually, it is a lot easier than it sounds. It just takes some determination and effort, and the results will make it all worthwhile. How much you eat:rnPortion size does make a difference. Even if you eat smartly, but eat enormous quantities, you will gain weight, which is another no-no for diabetes. rnDo not overeat no matter how delicious the meal. Make sure your meal consists of protein, healthy carbs and healthy fats. This will satisfy your hunger and help your health. When you eat:rnKeeping regular meal times and snack times helps your body process sugar and regulates the production of insulin. It is very important to eat a healthy breakfast. Do not make do with a cup of coffee. Make time for breakfast. Eat small meals every few hours. Generally 3 small meals, and 3 healthy snacks through the day is good for your body and your blood sugar levels.
Exercise.rnI can never say it enough. Exercise, exercise, exercise! Exercise helps control your weight, improves mood, boosts energy levels, improves your sex life, and promotes better sleep. This, in addition to helping your body stay healthy and flexible. Need I say more? So, get off that couch and start walking, running, swimming, climbing, hiking. Or, join a gym or work out group. Or, just dance! Whatever turns you on and gets you moving. What better way to get healthy and fit? And exercise helps your diabetes as well by keeping your weight down, and lower your blood sugar levels. It also lowers your risk of heart disease, which is a major concern for diabetics.
