The Glycemic Index is a numerical index which is used to rank carbohydrates on the basis of rate of glycemic response (i.e. their conversion to glucose within the human body). Glycemic Index is used to scale on the basis of 1 to 100. Foods which cause the most rapid rise in blood sugar have higher values. Glycemic Index is very important for human body. Body performs best when blood sugar is kept relatively constant. You become lethargic or feel more hunger if your blood sugar drops too low and your brain signal your pancreas to secrete more insulin if blood sugar level goes too high. Working of glycemic index in human body is highly complicated and it can’t be generalized to all people. It varies from people to people. Various people have various reactions to food. These reactions depend on various factors such as activity, level, age, insulin level, amount of fiber, time of day as well as fat in the food. Low glycemic index foods will have little effect on the body’s sugar level. It’s just opposite; foods that have high glycemic index will have an instant effect on blood sugar levels. Low glycemic foods will release glucose gradually into the blood stream. Carbohydrate composition will also affect the reaction of body’s sugar levels. Low glycemic index foods are wholegrain break, lentils, fruits, baked beans, soybeans, breakfast cereals (that are based on barley, oats and wheat bran). People who eat low GI foods tend to have lower total body fat levels. Low GI carbohydrates are always a preferred choice for health perspective. Low GI foods are also helpful for the people who are suffered from diabetes.
