A present or a gift can be described as voluntary transfer of goods, money etc. to someone without any expectation in return. It depicts love and affection between the person giving and the person receiving gifts. In personal life, people give away gifts & mementos in birthdays, marriage anniversaries, festivals and other special occasions to their loved ones to express the warmth of their relationship.

Corporate Gifts are a similar but somewhat enlarged version of the above mentioned concept for personal gifts. The valuable items that are offered to recipients by an organization's representative as an expression of appreciation & goodwill, are known as Corporate Gifts. These are definitely an important tool for advertising a firm in order to spread its corporate message amongst the intended audience. This industry is flourishing day by day and has now established itself as a niche market sector.

Unlike promotional gift items, these do not carry an advertising message; these generally carry best wishes & personalized messages with the recipient's name. These are the most creative means to reach target audience, build strong & long lasting business relationships and hold most productive employees within the organization. Now a days, intangible gifting such as holidays and cruises are immensely popular across the country and overseas.

History and evolution:

Also known as Promotional Merchandise are an ideal & inexpensive way to increase brand awareness of an business enterprise. It is believed that giving away giftings began in early 1789 in the United States. The very first series of Corporate Gifts include advertisement calendars which was later followed by pen-stands, pen sets, diaries, paper weights and other wooden items.

Centuries after, numerous innovative ideas have emerged in the creation of Corporate Gifts which are decorative and at the same time highly functional items. From mere calendars, the merchandise has evolved to many more utility items such as T-shirts, shirts, key chains, hand bags, clocks, electronics, portfolio bags, coffee mugs, cups, Universal Serial Bus & storage devices, ash-trays, caps, perfumes, candle stands, crockery and so on. Earlier most corporate gifts were exchanged during Christmas and New Year, as these were the festive occasions worldwide. But, now a days these are given away throughout the year to maintain cordial and affable business relations with buyers, suppliers and other recipients.

Importance:

It has become the most contemporary way to motivate employees, stakeholders and to welcome existing as well as potential clients. Corporate Gifts sometimes custom designed to suit the needs of the business firm with its name and logo on it.

Corporate Gifts are mostly presented by firms during conferences, trade shows and trade fairs to launch a new product line or promote an existing range of products or services. Apart from promoting business ties with clients, which are also a means of expression of thanks-giving.

Corporate gifting is more effective than verbal appreciation and is the best means for an organization to gain brand loyalty which further leads to a long term business relationship with customers and as well as employees.
