Cosmetic surgery, as the name suggests, is about the appearance of an individual. Cosmetic surgery intends to improve the looks of an individual and has nothing to do with his health. There are several procedures some operative and others non-operative that are available to improve some of the parts of the body and enhance the beauty of an individual. All these procedures fall under the category of Cosmetic Surgery.
Also referred to as Aesthetic surgery, this surgery is performed to reshape the normal features of the body. In cosmetic surgery clinics, doctors correct physical abnormalities, if any or simply work on the physical features to give an improved appearance.
The field of this surgery is extensively broad. It is one part of plastic surgery, the other one being reconstructive surgery. However, in some cases both the parts of plastic surgery are required to be performed together.
There are some forms of cosmetic surgery that have become very popular. These are:
Liposuction: It is also known as fat modeling. It means sucking out excessive fat of the body with a tube and a vacuum device. The tube is called a cannula and this is passed through the fatty tissue. The can be vibrated with an attached motor and the process breaks the fat tissues which are then sucked out.
Rhinoplasty: Through this process, corrections are made in the structure of the nose.
Blepharoplasty: This is an eyelid surgery where the eyelid is repositioned. In case of lower eyelid surgery, the puffy bags below the eyelids are corrected.
Hair transplantation: This is a technique of hair restoration. If done rightly, a hair transplant surgery can produce lifelong results.
Breast augmentation and reduction: Through breast implantation surgeries, the shape and size of the breasts are corrected.
Face Lift: Also known as Rhytidectomy, face lift surgery is used to bring back rejuvenation to the face and neck areas affected during to aging.
Mommy Makeovers: These are meant for women to restore their post pregnancy bodies back to the original form. These may involve a host cosmetic surgery procedures like, tummy tuck, breast implantation, liposuction in thighs and eyelid surgery.
Anyone opting for any kind of cosmetic surgery should remember that ultimately it is a surgery. It has risks and complication associated with it. Like any other surgery, the procedures may not come out as intended by the surgeon and the patient. The patient should have realistic expectations from the surgery. The patient should get as much information as possible about the procedures he wants to undergo. In the end, the decision of undergoing a cosmetic surgery to should be one’s own. One should not let others pursue him/her in opting for a cosmetic surgery.
