As teachers, we have to create an environment in the classroom where children are exposed to high-quality language in diverse forms. Basically, language acquisition and its use constitute the fundamental areas of reading, writing, and communication and these are taught in details in a language enrichment course that is provided by a teachers training institute. However, students must not be only passive observers of the language they see on books or advertisement in roads. As a teacher, you need to have the goal of creating a language-rich environment. There must also be student exposure to language which will be meaningful, repetitive, deliberate, and engaging where it directly involves the students as active participants. Let us see some of the procedures to develop this language-rich environment below. Reading Aloud Reading aloud is an important part which allows teachers the opportunity to guide students in enhancing their vocabulary. The process to do this is to use a shared literary experience, where fluency will be modeled along with encouraging students to discuss. As teachers, you can also use read-aloud books for students in order to give them access to language so that they are able to read and understand on their own. Sometimes, it is often recommended to buy multiple copies of read-aloud books that are easy to understand and are most sought after books by the children. In the language enrichment course, you will learn more about the procedures of reading aloud for children. Word Games You can organize word walls or word games that have evolved over the years now showcase specific terminology. You will state several words which will help your students to enrich their language. At times these words can be used in whole group discussions, but more frequently these words can be written on walls or can be attached in a sticky note for the students. To help students make meaningful connections between words and concepts you can also add small pictures or symbols in the notes. Charts Like words, there must be anchor charts which serve as a visual reference of concepts that have been taught in the classroom. In these charts, there will be a lot of concepts, cues, and guidelines for learning. These charts will also help your students to make connections prior to learning and they serve as a gateway to learning new things. In the language enrichment course, you will learn the methods of making charts for your students in details. Creating Diverse Classrooms There should be a balance of fiction and nonfiction text but the genres can be anything in the different forms. In your library, there must be a lot of magazines, books and graphic novels which can help your students develop a good hold over the language. The more materials students have, the more likely they will be able to enrich their languages. These are some of the conventional procedures of enriching the language which you will be able to learn from a language enrichment course and the unconventional procedures you will learn from day to day experiences while teaching.
