“All of a sudden it feels like life is kicking me in the face. Things were going well. Business was increasing, our family was happy and healthy, and I was feeling good about myself for the first time in a long time, then out of no where…………” Fill in the blank. (..my brother said,… there was this horrible accident, …all of my client appointments cancelled).

A string of strong thoughts and beliefs starts to worm their way in our minds, “What did I do to deserve this?”, “Yup, I should have expected this, every time something good happens something bad happens.” I am so stupid.” Defeating belittling self talk generate questions about our values, beliefs and morals.

The voice inside our head demands our attention by creating confusion, self doubt and fear. “Is my brother right and I am mismanaging our families funds?” “Am I at fault for this accident? If I had only paid more attention, focused on the sidewalk instead of the snow maybe I would not have fallen down.” “I am so stupid for not listening to the weather report; if I would have I would have known the road was slick.” I need to try harder, be more attentive.

Stewing on these negative thoughts we justify more negative comments about ourselves and create a court battle in our mind where the prosecution atto
ey (that negative inner voice) is very persuasive. Easily convincing the jury (your mind, emotions and actions) that the negative thoughts are necessary which generates more need for punishment - more negative self talk producing more negative results.

Many believe that the negative self talk is motivational. If we continue to tell ourselves that we are ugly or fat or stupid we will create change. Reflect for a moment. Has it ever given you the inspiration or determination to change? My guess, NO!!!!.

Look into a mirror and introduce yourself to the person you really are. My guess she is pretty darn cool. The person looking back at you has had some success; she is kind, courageous, strong and much, much more. Notice what you are doing that is right what helps you to feel fulfilled. Practice being the kind of person you really are rather than what the demeaning inner voices wants you to believe.

Soon that quieter inner voice will be exceptional at defending your strengths and you will feel motivated to make the change you desire.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result. Notice when that demanding voice starts telling you why you are no good enough or strong enough or smart enough and scream STOP!
