Customs of the Big Fat Punjabi Wedding

North Indian wedding comprises of events like Roka, Haldi, Mehndi, Sangeet, Vatna, Shagun, Chuda and many more. Punjabi and the Rajasthani weddings are the elaborate among all the states and depict culture and heritage of India. The wedding rituals start with Roka. Here the bride and the groom give the first consent for entering wedlock and a formal relationship between two families begin. However the most enjoyable event in Punjabi custom is the Sangeet. Here the lighting and sound play the main role and the relatives from both the sides dance to the tune of the traditional, folk and contemporary Hindi and Punjabi songs. This is traditionally a ladies function but now men also take part in the Sangeet.

However, after the Roka Sagan follows. Here a performed the bride’s father applies ‘tilak’ on the forehead of the groom and bestow him offering sweets and cash gifts. Sagan is followed by ‘Chunni Chadana’. This is a ceremony performed in the bride’s house. The groom’s sister and the other female members of the family present the bride with a red saree, places a red veil on the head of the bride and bestow her with traditional ornaments. There after girl is fed with boiled rice and milk and the ceremony concludes with the exchange of ring between the wedding couple. This event is like the engagement ceremony in western world. After this, the main enjoyable part of wedding, Sangeet start. Just after it ‘Haldi’, where herbal turmeric paste is applied on the body of the boy and the girl, then ‘Mehndi’ is designed on bride’s hand and finally ‘Chuda’ is put on her hand. There after the main wedding follows and finally concludes with reception thrown by the boy’s family. However, modern Indian youths also throw bachelor’s party and also exchange kiss on the special day.

The food, decoration, flowers, music, lighting, flowers play an important role in Indian marriage. Hence the caterer, decorator, electrician, musician, florist are the back bone of a successful Indian marriage. Another essential factor is photography. Now the event managers are very common. The event management companies take the whole responsibility from the bridal make up to the car decoration, food, music, card designing everything. Different themes like royal, floral are also a new fashion in India.
