What is Cutaneous Mucinosis?
Mucinoses are commonly defined as a diverse group of Rare Skin Diseases. All types of Cutaneous Mucinosis involves the accumulation of an excessive amount of mucin in the skin. In general terms, mucin is a jelly-like complex which is mainly composite of carbohydrate substance. This substance is known as Hyaluronic acid which is a normal part of the connective tissues that are normally present in the mid-layer or dermis of the skin. The excess amount of Hyaluronic acid can be either Widespread or Localised. The problem of Cutaneous Mucinosis varies from minor cosmetic problems to potentially severe skin problems. At its severe stage, Cutaneous Mucinosis also involves internal organs of the body.
Classification of Cutaneous Mucinosis
Cutaneous Mucinoses are classified into two main categories and then those two categories are further divided into various parts. The two main categories of Cutaneous Mucinosis are written below along with subcategories:

A. Localized Mucinoses
The Localised Mucinoses is further divided into six different types i.e.
- Angiomyxoma
- Mucinous Nevus
- Papular Mucinosis
- Focal Cutaneous Mucinosis
- Digital or Myxoid mucous cyst
- Acral Persistent Papular Mucinosis
B. Generalized or Extensive Mucinoses
This type of Mucinoses is also further categorized into six different types i.e.
- Scleredema
- Scleromyxedema
- Follicular Mucinosis
- Cutaneous Lupus Mucinosis
- Reticular Erythematous Mucinosis
- Pretibial Myxoedema which is further associated with Thyroid Disease.
Sometimes excessive deposition of Mucin may also occur due to other disorders skin which is also known as Secondary Mucinoses.
Who may get Cutaneous Mucinosis?
Any person can get it at any time in his or her life. But the people who are suffering from the following disorders have more chances of suffering from the problem of Cutaneous Mucinosis.

Causes of Cutaneous Mucinosis
The Exact Underlying cause of this group of skin disorders is not known.
Signs and Symptoms of Cutaneous Mucinosis:
Cutaneous Mucinosis disorder commonly affects the Neck, Scalp as well as Face but it may affect any other part of the body.
Some of the most common symptoms of Cutaneous Mucinosis are
- Group of Follicular Papules that are usually grouped with Dry and Red Plaques and Patches.
- Plaques and Patches are Two to Five centimeters in length but in some cases, it can be larger.
- A single lesion that gets Multiplied to Multiple lesions within a few weeks.
- Permanent loss of hair at the affected area after some time which may further cause Scarring Alopecia.
- Some initial symptoms that are treatable with cosmetic but if not treated in time then they become Chronic.
