What does George Washington, Benjamin Franklin and painter Pablo Picasso all have in common? They all had the privilege of owning the worlds most recognizable and lovable dog, the Dalmatian. Dalmatians have been around for hundreds of years, having been known as circus, carriage and even War Dogs. They are easily recognized by their well-defined, muscular body and spotted coat. They became quite popular after the release of Walt Disney's 1961 film, "One Hundred and One Dalmatians", which was based on the 1956 children's novel, "The Great Dog Robbery" by Dodie Smith.

The Dalmatian is often portrayed as having black spots, which are called "Liver Spots", but some of these beautiful dogs have been known to have brown, yellow and even some-what blue spots. They are born all white without any spots, but the first spots begin to appear within a week and gradually increase with age. The eye color of the Dalmatian often vary between amber, brown or blue. Sometimes they will have alte
ating eye colors. For instance, one eye can be brown while the other eye can be blue.

Dalmatians are extremely energetic and need plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. If not given the right amount, they can become pretty destructive and your furniture, lawn or even your favorite shoes may suffer the consequences. Just by taking them along on a brisk walk, hike or jog can actually help burn off some of their excess energy. This breed makes the perfect pet for family's who enjoy the company of a playful dog.

Dalmatian decor has become quite popular in children's bedrooms today. Since this breed of dog has been associated with the Fire Department for many years, the coolest fire truck and Dalmatian themed bedroom can be created. Always start with the bed when decorating. The rest becomes easy once the bedding has been chosen. There are so many options when it comes to the style and color of the bedding for this particular theme. A fire truck or Dalmatian bedding is a great choice but you can also choose simple solid color bedding and save some extra cash.

When sticking with solid bedding, choose colors that remind you of the fire department, such as red, black, white, yellow and blue. For example, a simple solid blue duvet cover with a couple of red and yellow small decorative pillows. You can add firefighter badges onto the pillows for a fun look. Another option is purchasing fire fighter themed shams or decorative plush pillows to use with the solid color duvet covers. Become more creative and use sheets that alte
ate with the duvet cover. For example, yellow sheets with a red duvet cover or vise versa.

Once the bedding has been chosen, you can move on to the decor. Add murals or peel and stick wall decals of fire engines, hydrants, Dalmatians and fire fighters onto the walls. Paint the dresser white with black spots. Also, place shelves on walls and decorate them with toy fire trucks, stuffed plush dalmatian puppies, etc. A clothing pole can also be placed in the room to hang your little firefighters jacket, hat and boots. Finish with a fire engine toy box.
