Mankind has often been in constant search for the right sources, which would provide them with surplus energy. Today the economy of the world has turned out to be very robust and dynamic thanks to the fossil fuels, which have contributed to this change. When the crude oil was first discovered to be a major source of fuel for the vehicles and also for providing the electricity the world around, it became the most wanted fuel.

With the help of modern technology, it was found out that crude oil deposits that were crucial for the current economy, could be found not only inland but also at the bottom of the seas. When it was found that, the volume of crude oil deposits was several times much larger than those found on the land, most of the nations started setting up offshore drilling rigs for oil drilling. It is a well known fact that, before any oil drilling well is to be drilled its success lies in smartly locating it. This work is mostly undertaken by the experts in the geology field, who do magnetic as well as seismic surveys down the ocean floors. Thus if the first part is quite successful, then the second part that comprises the drilling of the ocean floor, is taken up by the oil drilling companies.

When such countries in the Gulf, United States of America and many others tasted success in the oil drilling in the deep seas, they were followed by smaller nations. Thus began the saga of offshore drilling in the seas and oceans. Oil drilling companies have become so much involved in this process to reap out millions that, the adverse affects that such oil drilling rigs could pose to the environment, was totally neglected. It was only because of the studies done by environmental groups like the Greenpeace and many other groups, which the hazards such wells can pose to the environment and marine life, came to the forefront. Despite their continuous protests worldwide, the oil drilling companies concentrate much on exploiting Mother Nature.

The world has seen many disasters, which have been caused by the oil spills given out by the offshore oil drilling platforms. These are caused much due to the lack of preventive measures taken, that have to be pursued during the closure or the decommissioning of the oil drilling wells. Unsound practices added with unsafe plugging and cementing of the oil rigs, cause catastrophe to the fragile environment. The tremendous oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico in the year 2010 is a grim reminder of the amount of devastation that, such an oil spill can very well cause and spoil the entire environment surrounding that particular area. Hence it is up to the government of any country, which has to takes care of putting the wanted pressure on the oil drilling companies, so that they will very well obey all the safety norms during the offshore drilling process and cause no harm to the environment.
