Dealing with Stress
Symptoms:
There will be stressful periods during everyone’s stay at school, university and for some a small amount can be motivating and help improve performance of a particular. However, extended periods of stress are highly distracting unhealthy.
Symptoms can include difficulty sleeping, always in tension, difficulty concentrating and in some cases, sweating or fluctuations in body temperature.
If you’re feeling like the world is collapsing around you then there are steps you can take to get back on track. Your first step is to identify the factors contributing to your stress. It may be one big project/essay/exam that is the issue, but take your lifestyle into account as well.
Direct Action:
Making a few simple adjustments to your lifestyle can make all the difference. Make an action plan - identify a goal and formulate steps to reach it. Get advice about your situation from someone such as you father, brother who has some knowledge or expertise on the subject.
Talk to someone who is positive and reliable.
If you’re spending hours indoors glued to your laptop – get outside! Try taking a short walk to clear your head.
Adjust Lifestyle:
Regular exercise will release endorphins and give you an outlet. Eating regular, healthier meals and choosing foods that will give slow release energy and help maintain blood sugar levels. You may believe you’re a night owl but try getting an early night. Your problems will be easier to tackle after a good night’s sleep. Surround yourself with motivated and positive people, read a story of a person who is top in your field.
