The Italian wines are graded they are the finest wines in the world. Nearly, 8 billion bottles are exported around the world. Each wine region produces unique style of wines. Italy has almost 20 wine regions. The list of wine regions in Italy includes Abruzzo, Aosta Valley, Apulia, Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Emilia-Romagna, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Latium, Liguria, Lombardy, Marches, Molise, Piedmont, Sardinia, Sicily, Trentino-Alto Adige, Tuscany, Umbria, and Veneto. The Italian wine classification system is made similar to U.S appellation system .It consists of four categories. Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG)-This classification was started in 1980. It is the highest classification under the appellation. Government seals have different colors according to the variety of the DOCG wine: light pink is for sparkling wines, light green is used for white wines whereas magenta denotes red wines. Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC)- This system was started in 1963.According to this appellation, the wines should be made in specified, government defined zones, minimum alcohol level, color, aging period, guaranteed grape variety.Chemical analysis is done to ensure quality.rnThe table wine categories are, Indicazione di Geografica Tipica (IGT)-This is originated in 1992; it is the modified and expanded form of DOC. This wine was created for new wines for Italy, which has broken the strict laws of old wines. Presently there are 121 IGT zones. Vino Da Tavola (VdT) - The table wines of Italy comes under this category. This appellation should fulfill single qualification is that the wine has to be manufactured in Italy. These are cheap wines produced for everyday purpose. Italian red wines are world famous wines. The Italian red wines are unique due to their taste, higher acidity, and aroma. Italian Red Grape Varieties are, Aglianico: Aglianico is the red wine grape grown in the Campania and Basilicata in southern regions of Italy. Aglianico is originated in Greece. Aglianico makes dark, red wines of high quality. It is one of the finest red grape varieties and has very good potential. Barbera: Barbera is the most cultivated red grape variety in Italy. It has deep color, no tannin and high acidity. It is found abundantly in the regions of Asti and Alessandria, but also in Cuneo and Turin, as well as other Piedmont areas. Corvina: Corvina grape based wines are light to medium bodied, high acidity, medium tannin. The famous wines of the Veneto are Valpolicella and Amarone. After the drying process the Valpolicella turns into Amarone. Amarone is well known for its extreme alcohol content. Nebbiolo: Nebbiolo is the prominent variety in Piedmont region. It produces high acidity and medium tannin. This grape makes two finest wines of Italy. They are Barolo and Barbaresco. Earlier small amount of Barbera grapes were blended with Nebbiolo. The Most Italian white wine is best consumed young. The popular white grape varieties are, Verdicchio: It is the white grape variety grown in the central Italy namely Marche Region It is medium bodied, crisp acidity and aromas of lemon. Prosecco: This grape is grown exclusively in Veneto region. This variety is used to make sparkling wines. This grape style varies from sweet to dry with crisp flavors of apples and pears. Arneis: This grape is cultivated in Piedmont It is popular around the city of Alba. It is low in acidity and flavorful with notes of melon, almonds, and flowers. Trebbiano: This grape very common in Italy. Trebbiano is usually dry and acidic. It is known as Ugni Blanc in France.
