Types of Dental Bracesr
Dental braces are used in cases of crooked teeth or a misaligned bite. In some cases, all you may need would be retainers. Sometimes, those with an extreme overbite, or under bite, may require surgery. But most people just need braces to gradually correct their teeth alignment. Usually your dentist will direct you to an orthodontist, a dentist specializing in correcting tooth irregularities: the orthodontist. After studying your teeth formation, your orthodontist will prescribe an appliance that suits your specific needs.

Braces usually consist of bands and wires as well as other fixed or removable corrective appliances. There are three main types of braces:
• Brackets bonded to the front of each tooth. These are usually made of stainless steel, silver, gold, titanium or in tooth-colored materials such as ceramic or plastic. Stainless steel ones are the most affordable of all options. However, they tend to stain the surface of the teeth. Titanium braces are the same color as stainless steel braces and useful for people who are allergic to stainless steel. They are however much more expensive than stainless steel braces. Those who are allergic to stainless steel or prefer the gold or silver colors can go for gold or silver braces instead.

Many people prefer ceramic or plastic braces, as they are more esthetically pleasing. However, they are prone to staining and discoloration, but do not stain the teeth surface. Unlike stainless steel brackets, ceramic or plastic brackets also cause more friction between the wire and brackets, prolonging the treatment period.
• Lingual-type brackets attached to the back of teeth -- Because they are hidden from view, these are preferred by people who do not want their braces to be seen. Speaking with these braces on may be difficult at first. They can be uncomfortable and even cause cuts and sores on the tongue.
• Traditional bands with the "full metal-mouth" look. These braces are an outdated option, which uses metal brackets attached to metal bands that wrap around each tooth.

You may wish to explore the new mini-braces which are much smaller and less noticeable than the conventional ones. They are also more comfortable to wear. Some such as the Invisalign braces are removable, which comes in handy when eating and brushing teeth. However, they need to be changed every two weeks and are rather expensive. Because they are new, many dentists are not familiar or trained on their use.

Because so many people wish to improve their smiles, and many need to wear braces, new developments are constantly entering the braces market. Consult your dentist and orthodontist on what braces are best for you and your budget.
