While healthcare has certainly evolved over time, so has our lifestyle. Today we consume more manufactured products than ever before, our produce is not organic and we rely excessively on over-the-counter medications, “While medication helps, a healthy diet is essential for recovery,” explains a dentist in Diamond Bar, “Our body requires nutrients, and natural food is an excellent source for minerals and vitamins.”

Our immune system is the most powerful defense against disease and bacteria, however like any other system it requires fuel, “People used to rely on herbs alone; there were no pills to pop or syrups to take. What’s left of that culture is a bunch of old wives tales, which in some cases are still quite effective (laughs),” shares the Diamond Bar dentist. However, there is an increase in general awareness, a lot of people are going green or shifting to organic produce to promote a healthier and happier lifestyle.

A recent study showed that coconut oil can help prevent oral cavities. While coconut oil has lots of other health benefits, scientist discovered that enzyme treated coconut oil can inhibit the growth of bacteria causing tooth decay. Dr. Damien Brady of Athlone Institute of Technology believes that adding enzyme treated coconut oil in dental products can be a more attractive alternative to chemicals. “We are already seeing a trend towards products with natural ingredients. There are see through bar wraps and juices with no added additives, companies are changing their strategy to cater to more aware and health conscious consumer,” explains the dentist in Diamond Bar.

Other foods that can help you improve your dental health include celery, carrots and apples. Crunchy natural foods help clean the teeth by removing the sticky plaque and increasing the saliva flow. Milk and cheese can help provide calcium and nullify acid and bacteria, “Orange juice is a popular choice as well, Vitamin C can help combat bacteria and gum disease,” explains the Diamond Bar dentist.

Raw onion also carries antibacterial properties while broccoli and spinach are known to protect the teeth against stains. The green vegetables leave an invisible film over your teeth which can protect the tooth from acid. Last but not the least water is essential for keeping the salivary glands active and cleansing the mouth by removing food debris.

However the key to healthier life and improved oral hygiene is regular care. Sugary foods containing lot of starch can be detrimental for general health and your teeth. Oral bacteria thrive on sugar, which is why it’s important to maintain a balanced diet, “Sugar should be avoided as much as possible! And if you have sugar, make sure you brush your teeth and floss afterwards,” shares the dentist in Diamond Bar. A good healthy diet with proper oral hygiene can help you ward off most dental problems.
