Dental implants are made up of an artificial tooth which is inserted to the bone via a titanium post. The dental implants are very secure. Dental implant surgery results are very close in appearance to natural teeth. Titanium bone implants will, with time, bond to the bone making them very secure with a very natural, normal feel. You really won't be able to tell the difference. Believe it or not, dental implants are not new concept. Dental artifacts have been discovered in Central America that demonstrate that oral implants in bone have been used for years. In fact, they aren't even a recent dental technology. In Honduras, when excavating Mayan burial sites bone material was found that had implants in the jawbone. This is as far back as 680 AD. The specimen that was discovered was that of a woman around 20 years old. Shell was inserted to the bone material of missing sockets from lower incisors. The discovery included 3-tooth shaped pieces. You see, it's nothing new. It's been around for centuries. The technology improvements differ in the implants materials used today. Dental implants today are not made of shell, they are made of titanium. It looks much like a screw securely fastened into the bone of the jaw adn teeth are attached. Bone health is important for the implants to be ossible. There must be a sufficient amount of bone mass available in the jaw for the procedure to be performed. There are many factors that are considered in order to make the determination if the dental implants match the purpose of the teeth and, the bone mass available. Considerations include the use of the teeth, or purpose for the tooth that is being restored, the particular anatomy where the dental implant will be placed, and also the amount of force that will be needed by the tooth after the dental implants are in place. Each one of the teeth are designed and manufactured specifically and individually for the dental implant surgery that matches the needs and anatomy of the patient. The rate of success is 95% for dental implants. For how long will the implants last? Usually, between 15-25 years. This, of course, depends largely on variables mentioned previously including bone density, oral health, dental history. Smoking can greatly reduce the rate of success. Implants may not be placed until the patient has stopped smoking. Then again, there have been cases in which implants have lasted for a much longer time than expected. Dental implants require the same type of care as natural teeth. Meaning, the same dental habits suggested for good oral health is needed after dental implant surgery. This includes the same care recommended for natural teeth and gums to avoide periodontal disease and bone loss - brushing and flossing. Statistically, only 5% reject dental implants. For dental implants to last for a long time, the first step is consultation with a specialist in dental implants. Your specialist can give you advice to prolong the life of the implants. Consideration must be taken into account for teh dental insurance policy of the patient. Equally important is the financial concerns of the dental implants. Not all insurance companies are willing to pay for the dental implant surgery. Cosmetic surgery involving teeth is not always covered by dental insurance policies. Instead, they may only pay for an alternative to dental implants, bridgework. All of theswe factors can be decided with the help of your dental implant specialist.
