The natural fluoride that shields the surface of the teeth must be sustained at all times to prevent bacteria from forming pits and fissures. Sometimes, regular brushing with fluoride-containing toothpaste is not enough because even the short time between brushing is enough for bacteria to start damaging the teeth. Regular remineralization is necessary to counteract demineralization caused by drinking water. The chances of acquiring cavities have been greatly reduced when public water suppliers started to add to public drinking water, since the teeth can get remineralized just by drinking or gargling. However, not all the teeth experience as much remineralization as required, such as those in the inner part of the mouth, particularly the molars and premolars. These teeth have pits and fissures, which are good places for bacteria to accumulate. Once bacteria accumulate in the inaccessible spaces of the teeth, cavity can start corroding their smooth surface. Bacteria can transform carbohydrate or sugar compounds in the fissures into acids that decay the teeth. Dentists in cities like Los Angeles prevent cavities in a variety of ways. Aside from promoting proper oral care though brushing, rinsing and flossing everyday, they also apply dental sealants on vulnerable teeth. Dental sealants are plastic materials used to shield the teeth from dental caries or cavities. A Los Angeles dentist would normally examine teeth that are already affected by caries and those which are most likely to be affected before applying the sealant. The plastic material is applied on surfaces aggravated by clenching or grinding through which the dentin is exposed. Once the pits and fissures are detected, the dental sealant is painted over the surface to form a thin film of protection. Then, a Los Angeles dentist would project a blue spectrum of light on the sealant for it to cure on the surface of the teeth. The resulting product is a hard composite material that can resist strong pressure caused by grinding. There are dental sealants that self-cure through a natural chemical on teeth. The finished product can last for five years without breaking or rapidly thinning after curing. However, a Los Angeles dentist would advice having regular checkups because food can stick on the sealant itself and trigger the development of cavities. Regular eating of fibrous food is also encouraged in order for saliva to be transported regularly between fissures.
