Every day people scour the Internet looking for toothache cures, ways to whiten teeth and different remedies to help cure gum disease. A visit to the dentist can help with all of these issues and allow people to get a complete checkup and assessment on their current state of oral health. In San Jose, CA for example there are dentists and orthodontists who are skilled at children’s or family dentistry, cosmetic dentistry and dental implants. Whether one needs a dentist who is skilled at orthodontics, a pediatric dentist or a dentist who can evaluate if one is a good candidate for dentures, trusting one’s oral health to a dentist is a wise choice.

The reason that home remedies are not a good long term solution for maintaining oral health is that they address the symptoms but don’t get at the cause of the malady. So if one has a cavity, bleeding gums, sensitive teeth or loose teeth, these are signs of an underlying problem. The dentist can discover what the problem is and prevent it from affecting other areas of the mouth so teeth can be preserved. If the problem has spread too far to be suppressed, then the dentist will recommend various procedures and products to allow the patient to regain normal chewing function. These may include dentures and dental implants. Often teeth don’t need to be removed; some dentists can work with existing teeth to rebuild or enhance them.

People who do visit their dentist regularly may still not be satisfied with their smile. In this case the dentist is still the best resource because they offer multiple methods that can whiten teeth. People can buy teeth whitening products but often the ingredients contained in these products can be harmful to tooth enamel. The dentist knows how to use various products and equipment (including lasers) to whiten teeth. Often these procedures can be performed quickly and people can enjoy movie star bright smiles on the same day that they come to the dentist’s office.

All of the aforementioned procedures can help people, but the main procedure that everyone is encouraged to get twice per year is a dental cleaning. Dentists know how to remove tartar and stains that have accumulated on teeth. It’s important to have a dentist perform these cleanings as they can see all the areas that need to be addressed, and they have the right equipment that can get into hard to reach places that can be missed with a toothbrush and floss. Once the plaque and tartar removal is complete, dentists use specialized cleaning paste and equipment that ensures the teeth are completely clean. It’s hard for people to get the same level of clean at home as they can get with a thorough dental cleaning.

While it’s enticing to read the shortcuts and home remedies available on forums on the Internet, ultimately visiting the dentist for cleanings and procedures is the best way to maintain oral health. Regular dentist visits can help prevent cavities and gum disease and if a person is in need of cosmetic dentistry, dentures or implants, the dentist is the best qualified individual to provide these to the patient. Children need to get into the habit of taking care of their teeth, and the dentist can help them learn these good habits. Ideally everyone will look forward to their dentist visits as a way to ensure their oral health at every age.
