Depression is a medical illness that causes a constant feeling of sadness and loss of interest. It can also cause physical symptoms. It affects how you think, feel and behave. It can lead to a variety of physical and emotional problems. You may have trouble doing normal day-to-day activities, and it may make you feel as if life isn't worth living. More than just a short period of strong emotion or attack of illness, it isn't a weakness, nor is it something that you can simply "snap out" of. It is a constantly recurring illness that normally requires long-term treatment, like high blood pressure or diabetes. But don't get discouraged. Most people with it feel better with medication, or psychological counseling, and other treatment. Symptoms: • Feelings of unhappiness or sadnessrn• Frustration or irritability, even over small mattersrn• Loss of interest in normal activitiesrn• Reduced sex drivern• Excessive sleeping or insomniarn• Changes in appetite — depression often causes decreased appetite and weight loss, but in some people it causes increased desire for Food and weight gain • Agitation or restlessness — for example, hand-wringing pacing, or an inability to sit stillrn• Irritability or angry outburstsrn• Slowed thinking, speaking or body movementsrn• Indecisiveness, distractibility and decreased concentrationrn• Fatigue, tiredness and loss of energy — even small tasks may seem to require a lot of effortrn• Feelings of guilt or worthlessness, blaming yourself when things aren't going right or fixating on past failuresrn• Trouble concentrating, thinking, remembering things and making decisionsrn• Frequent thoughts of death, dying or suicidern• Crying spells for no apparent reasonrn• Unexplained physical problems, such as headaches or back pain Causes: It's not known exactly what causes it. A variety of factors may be involved which are: • Biological differences. • Neurotransmitters. • Hormones. • Inherited traits. • Life events. • Early childhood trauma. Treatment: Numerous depression treatments are available. Psychological counseling (psychotherapy) and medications are very effective for most people. In a few cases a primary doctor can prescribe medications to relieve the symptoms occurred due to it. However, many people need to see a doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating mental health conditions (psychiatrist). Many people with it also benefit from seeing a psychologist or other mental health counselor. Normally the most effective treatment for depression is a combination of medication and psychotherapy. There's no sure way to prevent depression. However, taking various measures to control stress, to increase your ability to recover from illness and to boost low self-esteem may help.
