A homepage is a company’s face to the world. The homepage's outcome on a company’s income is far greater than simple measures of e-commerce revenues. To a greater extent, potential customers will look at your company's online presence before planning to do business with you. The fundamental to create a homepage is to first understand the goals of the page and then design the page to meet those goals.

Here are few points to consider for increasing the usability of your homepage and enhancing your website's business value.

It is important to start page with a tagline that outlines what the site is about. When a first time visitor visits your site the primary thing they want to know is whether they are in the correct place. They will probably visit the website with some goal in mind and before spending any time trying to reach that task they need to decide if there’s a possibility for success. Generally this is also more important for the first time visitors to your site than repeat visitors. Make sure that information is immediately clear to anyone visiting your site. Another essential factor is to maintain consistent navigation. The best way is to easily highlight main sections of the site. This helps in leading people quickly to where they can go next. You can highlight sections of your site based on your business importance, your visitor’s likely tasks, and your visitor’s identity types. Choose a primary and secondary goals and direct visitors to them.

Presenting the repeat visitors what’s new on the website increases their interest and encourages them to visit again. Repeat visitors have already been to your home page before and have already absorbed what’s there. Emphasizing what was not there on the website when the repeat visitor visited the website for the last time helps build expectation to get them there quickly.

Including a search input box is an important part of any big website. When users want to search, they usually examine the homepage looking for the little box where they can type. Make your search box at least 25 to 27 characters wide so it can comfort multiple words. To help users locate key items, keep a short list of recent features on the homepage, and include a link to it.
