Parenting is really hard and there are some skills that, if you do not possess them naturally, you need to work hard to develop as you go. Lots of parents simply raise their kids in the manner that they were raised and that doesn't always yield the best results. Keep reading to learn which skills are the most important for you to develop. One of the most important things that you can do as a parent is to set a good example for your children. It is far easier for you to simply tell your kids what to and not to do but leading by example is what they need from you more than anything else. It is easier for kids to learn through observing others than it is for them to learn simply by being told things, so it's very important that you always match your words and your actions. As the parent you are absolutely your child's first role model so if you set a good example, it is far more likely that your kids will live up to the standards you set. For example, you will find that if you tell your kids not to swear but swear all the time yourself your kids are more likely to use profanity themselves (in spite of your telling them not to). One particular skill that you need to have as a parent is to be interested in some of the things that your children love. This could be anything really, but it goes a long way in making your children feel loved and appreciated. A common example of this is finding the time to attend an event in which your child is participating whether its a sport, music, a play or art show. Even if you don't really like the activity you should make a point to learn about it so that you can bond over it with your son or daughter. Most kids today have been conditioned to spend their spare time entirely in front of a computer or television screen or on their phones. This is why it is important to be able to teach your kids how to value free play. In addition to the organized activities for which you have signed them up, don't forget how valuable old fashioned play time at the park, on the playground or during play dates with friends can be. Studies show that kids who don't play enough are more likely to develop various behavioral problems such as aggression, depression and are even more likely to have ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder). A great way to help this along is to have day trips as a family during the weekend that involve things like walking, swimming, hiking and other outdoor activities. The above are some of the parenting skills that can be helpful in your relationship with your kids. Each parent faces unique challenges and these will be based on your personality and the personality of your kids. Try to remember that parenting is a process that changes a little bit each day as your child grows up but keeping some definite boundaries in place can be helpful both for you and your child.
