People suffering in the early stage of diabetes may not realize it, but they might need to wear shoes that have soft shoe insoles and materials that can absorb shock. They might not need orthopedic inserts immediately, but gradually they will need. Even for patients with early stage of diabetes, but if they feel that they never had a history for foot trouble; still they will need to take precaution. When they come to the stage where they can’t feel any more, or neuropathy, it is critical that they wear the right shoe.

At the early stage of diabetes, it is important to learn to buy the right shoe with right shoe insole because it will be useful for later, at latter stage of diabetes. Finding the right shoe with the perfect insert is important because it needs to reduce friction in the foot. The ill-fitting orthopedic inserts can cause blisters, ulcers and calluses.

What the insoles need to do?

The objectives of the right insole should relieve the areas where there is excessive pressure. The high pressure will cause ulcers and blisters. So the insert should reduce any form of pressure at all. The other objective of the insert is to reduce shock. The insert should reduce the overall shock, vertically and specifically at the bottom of the foot. It will also be useful if the horizontal movement within the shoe can also be reduced. The inserts and shoe should be able to accommodate and support the deformities. The deformities are in the form of Charcot development, losing fatty tissue, development of hammer toes and amputations. The deformities need to be stabilized, some deformities controlled and many other deformities supported, so that the pain of the person will reduce and the deformities will not worsen. The right shoe and orthopedic insert should see to that. The ideal orthopedic insert and shoe should also limit the movement in joints to relieve pain.

Types of inserts needed

For patients after the surgery or treatment of ulcer, the healing shoes are needed. These shoes are custom made with customized inserts that will stabilize the patient before they can move to a regular shoe. They also have the in depth shoe. This is where the shoe will have a quarter to a half inch addition space throughout the shoe compared to regular shoes. This is to accommodate the various inserts that will be needed. They will also need orthoses, that can be custom made, that will absorb shock and relieve pain.
