Many people get diagnosed with diabetes nowadays and one of the first things you are told is that you should try and eat plenty of vegetables. If you have type-2 diabetes, for instance, you need to load up with green leafy vegetables. So why is this? Well it is simply because these vegetables are packed with healthy vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants. They also provide you with plenty of fibre. The main benefit, however, is that you will help control your blood sugar levels if you have plenty of vegetables in your diabetes diet plan. One study carried out by Cambridge University found that eating salad reduced blood sugar levels in people with diabetes. Furthermore those that don't yet have the condition are less likely to suffer from diabetes in future years if they eat plenty of salads. So what vegetables offer the most benefits for diabetes sufferers? Well there are four that are particularly beneficial. The one that immediately springs to mind is broccoli. As you may already know, broccoli contains a lot of antioxidants, and therefore helps to control your blood sugar levels. It also treats insulin resistance and provides you with lots of soluble fibre. Beans are also really good for you because they have enzymes that work towards treating diabetes naturally. Therefore it is recommended that you try and include beans in your diet at least three times a week. Sweet potatoes are also beneficial. Don't be fooled by the name because sweet potatoes actually have a low Glycemic index of 54, which is less than peas, pasta and white potatoes. Indeed one study found that sweet potatoes could be a potential treatment for diabetes in the future, which would obviously help to do away with expensive medications. Finally the fourth type of vegetable that is beneficial for diabetes sufferers is actually a group of vegetables - leafy vegetables. These include the likes of lettuce, kale and spinach and they all help to keep sugar levels under control. A diet rich in these leafy veggies will make the cells' sensitivity to insulin better, and the condition will therefore be kept under control to some extent. There are plenty of ways you can consume these leafy vegetables. You can have them with a roast dinner, you can have them in a salad, or you could simply cook them lightly and have them with some bread. The point is that you should include them in your diet as much as possible. Diabetes is not a condition anybody wants, but you can keep it under control by eating the right diet, and that should include plenty of the vegetables mentioned in this article. I'm not suggesting you eat these vegetables every single day as part of your main meal, as that would be impractical and you would soon get bored of them. However you can include them in sandwiches, for example, have them in a salad at lunchtime and add them to other meals you may have. If you eat healthily and try and get plenty of exercise, you should find that you can control your blood sugar levels. As a result, you will require lower doses of medication in the future, which has to be a good thing.
