Being diagnosed with diabetes not only weighs heavily on your personal life, but significantly affects you financially. In 2007, the national cost of diabetes was an astonishing $174 billion. Diabetics continually face an uphill battle when it comes to adequate health care coverage. In the past, companies have charged people with pre-existing conditions, like diabetes, a higher premium rate. Some refuse to provide coverage altogether. Moreover, people with Type 2 diabetes face an even greater challenge acquiring financial assistance. Affordable health care is an important issue in the U.S. because 25.8 million people are diabetic. Sadly, from 2007 to 2009, 16% of adults received no medication. With so many Americans requiring some form of medical treatment, it is crucial to keep diabetes in the forefront of the minds of health care companies. Unfortunately for those that depend on them, diabetes supplies are expensive if you do not possess the proper health care coverage. Insulin pumps, glucose monitor kits, blood pressure monitors, lancing devices, diabetic footwear, oral medications, and diabetic test strips add up. For instance, those without health care might pay $75 for a box of 50 test strips. Unfortunately, Type 1 diabetics test their glucose levels between 2-6 times per day. This necessary expense adds up to a significant out-of-pocket loss for those not covered. Luckily, more health care plans cover all your diabetic expenses, or are at least willing to pay for a portion. Although health care companies do offer to pay for a portion, it might not be beneficial if they begin to charge higher deductibles or larger co-payments. However, there are online resources that offer diabetes supplies at a discounted price. These sites help in cutting medical costs for you and your family. In addition to adequate coverage, health care companies need to provide more informative pamphlets and classes about the disease. Diabetes education needs to play a larger role in the lives of those diagnosed as well as people at risk. Understanding how diabetes supplies affect you is instrumental to living a healthy lifestyle. It is as important knowing how to properly administer insulin shots as obtaining them. For Type 2 diabetics, closely monitoring your diet and exercising regularly naturally lowers your glucose levels, making medication obsolete. Also, regularly checking your feet for sores can lessen your diabetic costs. Smoking is discouraged for those that have diabetes because it increases your risk of a heart attack. Keeping these tips in mind will greatly reduce your health and financial costs. Finally, are you aware that diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S.? A majority of Americans do not realize that diabetes is a serious disease. Lack of care can cause kidney failure, non-traumatic lower limp amputations, blindness, heart disease, or stroke. It is for these reasons that diabetics and their loved ones must continue to proactively seek affordable assistance from health care companies.
