It’s probably not a surprise to you that any repeated physical movements we do in our lifetime affects our muscles. For example, if you sit at a computer 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, your shoulders, neck, or low back may began to hold a Chronic Stress Pattern.

However, physical stress is not the only danger to our muscles. We also hold Chronic Stress Patterns due to emotional tension or pain from our life experiences.

Here’s an exercise I want you to try. Think of a memory that worries, upsets, or stresses you out in any way. Really get into the moment and feel the emotion as if the experience is happening right now. Once you feel it at its peak, stop and take stock of how you feel not just emotionally but physically too.

Are your shoulders hunched up? Did your back tighten up? This is an emotional response to something outside of your current reality, but as you can see it is having a very detrimental effect on you right now. (To relax, take a deep breath, and think of the word “release” as your exhale.)

Not only do painful memories affect our muscles, but as Dr. Harold Bloomfield explains,“Unresolved emotional pain wreaks havoc on your immune system, cardiac function, hormone levels, and other physical functions.”

How many painful memories do you replay consciously and subconsciously on a daily basis? Just as our lives show the habits of our thoughts, beliefs, and actions, so do our bodies. So pay attention to your emotional health. Stop spending time worrying about the past or fearing the future, and focus on becoming aware of and releasing emotional tension that no longer serves you. Letting go of the “old stuff” will enable you to live more fully and joyously in the present moment.

If you experienced a trauma that you think is stored in your body’s memory, work with a qualified mental health professional or bodywork specialist.

One great way to release emotional stress from your muscles is massage. The Lomi Lomi style of massage in particular, focuses on releasing chronic emotional stress and tension from the muscles.
