What is Fatty Liver

It is the condition in which excess fat accumulates in the liver cells. It causes inflammation, scarring or liver failure, if not taken proper care of or remain untreated. Eating excess calories and fats result in accumulation of these fats in liver causing Fatty Liver. Therefore, Low fat Diet is highly recommended to Fatty Liver Patients. Unsaturated fats can also be added into diet but in very less quantity.

Diet Chart for Fatty Liver Patients

Early Morning

  • Luke warm water / soaked almond -5 / 1tsp flax seeds/Bitter gourd juice/Aloevera juice/Wheat grass juice/Amla juice

Breakfast

  • Veg sandwich (Without mayonnaise and sauce) /Veg poha/veg porridge / veg upma /Veg idli/ multigrain chapatti/ Missi chapatti +vegetable / Fresh Juice / Egg white

Mid Morning

  • Herbal tea/ fruit/ fruit juice/ coconut water/ buttermilk

Lunch

  • Chapatti / Multigrain Chapatti / rice / Veg pulao / Moong dal khichdi/Veg + Curd/Raita + Salad/ Chicken (Once in a week)

Evening

  • Fruit / Sprouts chat/ Riceflakes Snacks/Soup (homemade)/ Roasted makhane(occasionally) / Roasted chickpeas/Buttermilk/ Sattu/Coconut water

Dinner

  • Chapatti / Multigrain Chapatti / Brown rice / Veg pulao / monng dal klhichdi/ Veg + Dal + Salad

Diet Instructions

  • Wheat, White rice, Brown rice, Sorghum, Amaranth, Finger millet, Foxtail millet, Pearl millet, Buckwheat, Little millet

Flour Ratio- Wheat Atta (50%) + Soybean Atta (20%) + Ragi flour

  • Refined flour and its products

Fruits to Be Consumed

  • Apple, Banana, Water melon, Muskmelon, Avocado, Peaches, Pear, Coconut, Pomegranate, All types of berries , Figs, Mango, Litchi, Custard apple, Sapodilla, Pineapple,Grapes

Fruits to be Avoided

  • Citrus fruits like Orange, Lime, Canned fruits and juices

Vegetables to Be Consumed

  • Zucchini, Sweet potato, Pumpkin, Ginger, Celery,Tomatoes, Red onion, Coriander, Radish, Mushrooms, Spinach, Carrot, Peas, Fenugreek leaves, Potato, Yam, Okra, Bottle gourd, Bitter gourd , Broccoli, Cabbage, Brussels sprouts, Cauliflower, Cabbage, Kale.

Vegetables to be Avoided

  • Egg plant, Chili peppers, Canned vegetables

  • All pulse and legumes

  • Low-fat milk, Tofu, Curd, Yogurt, Buttermilk, Cottage cheese

  • Cow ghee, Sunflower oil, Canola oil, Olive oil, Mustard oil, Rice bran oil

Spices to be consumed

  • Cumin, Coriander, Salt, Turmeric, Ginger, Pepper, Fennel, Cinnamon

Drinks to be Consumed

  • Coconut water, Sugarcane juice, Homemade soups, Herbal tea, Buttermilk, Homemade juices

  • Whole milk drinks, Cream based liqueurs, canned soup and packaged soup, Alcohol, Sweetened drinks, Squashes, Carbonated drinks

Flesh foods to be consumed

  • Egg white, Roasted chicken, Grilled Fish, Lean meat, Skinless chicken (Once in a week)

  • Processed, Undercooked and fried meat, Red meat- (Beef, Lamb, Pork), Fishes –( Tilefish, Shark, Swordfish, King Mackerel, Marlin, Bluefin Tuna).

Dry Fruits/Seeds to be consumed

  • Almond, Raisins, Ground Nuts, Walnut, Peanuts, Pistachio, Cashew, Pumpkin Seeds, Chia Seeds, Flax Seeds, Sunflower Seeds, Sesame Seeds.

  • Nil

Prepared Foods to be Consumed

  • Jaggery

Prepared Foods to be Avoided

  • Bakery and Processed Foods, Fried Food, Junk Food, Pickles, Artificial Sweeteners, Packed Soups, Refined Sugar

RECIPES

  • Sattu

Ingredients

  • 1 liter water, 5 tbsp sattu, 5 tbsp jaggery, ½ teaspoon black salt.

Steps

  • Add sattu in water.
  • Add jaggery as per taste.
  • Add pinch of black salt and stir it properly.

Mattha

Ingredients

1 cup yoghurt, 2 cups water , ½ tsp roasted cumin powder, ½ inch piece of ginger, green chili, Black salt to taste, Mint leaves for garnishing

Steps

  • Mix all the ingredients in a blender.
  • Garnish it with mint.

TIPS

  • Loose weight but not more than one kilogram in a week.
  • Avoid alcohol.
  • Control obesity by eating balanced diet and increase physical activity.
  • Maintain normal level of triglyceride by low fat diet.
  • Avoid saturated fats.
  • Avoid skipping meals, especially the breakfast.
  • Water intake should be increased at least 8-10 glass of water.
