There is no doubt that the high protein low carbohydrate diets are effective for weight loss. But because the protein-rich foods usually have fat and cholesterol, there is concern that being on a diet high in protein can increase the risk of heart disease. Medical studies do not support this idea. A study published in the Canadian Journal of Cardiology in 1995 examined two groups of people with high cholesterol. They were placed on either low-protein high-carbohydrate or high protein low carb for four or five weeks and then switched to the opposite diet for four or five weeks. In other words, those who started with a low protein diet were switched to a diet high in protein, and vice versa. The amount of fat, cholesterol, fiber and was the same in both groups. People on high protein diet experienced to decline 9 percent of low-density lipoprotein (LDL, "bad" cholesterol), up 17 per cent increase in high density lipoprotein (HDL cholesterol, the "good ") and up to 23 percent reduction in triglycerides (blood fat). The authors concluded that "the substitution of dietary protein for carbohydrates human favorably alters cholesterol profiles in the blood of cardiovascular risk." In other words, eat protein instead of carbohydrates improves cholesterol levels in the blood. In 1999 the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published a study of more than 80,000 women who were followed for 14 years. Participants provided a detailed description of the type of foods they ate, including how often and how much. They were separated into 5 groups depending on the amount of protein in your diet. The lowest group ate 15 percent of calories as protein, while the highest consumption by 24 percent. After fourteen years there was a 26 percent reduction in risk of heart disease in the group who ate the most protein. According to the authors' our findingsstrongly reject the hypothesis that a high intake of protein, protein includinganimal is associated with an increased risk of ischemic heart disease. On the contrary, our results suggest that a relatively high dietwith protein, low carbohydrate contentmay reduce risk. " This research should realize that the protein is your friend. But it has to come from foods that are as close to natural as possible. There is nothing wrong with eating real eggs, but stay away from egg substitutes. Meat (beef, burgers) is okay, but not processed meats such as salami, bologna and sausages, because they are full of chemicals, some of which may increase your risk of cancer. As you can see, animal proteins are not "clogging the arteries," as some "experts" still call. People have been eating since the beginning of time and you can too. If you have been avoiding because you think it will make you healthier, you know better. If you really do not like meat or eggs, then by all means stay away from them. But if you like a good steak or an omelet, then go ahead and eat as often as you like. If you can get free-range, organic meat and eggs, even better. And do not worry about cholesterol, as studies show an increase, but the reduction in heart disease.
