Diets that work: A large number of diets are available claiming to help lose weight. It would be difficult to sieve trough all of them to reach a diet that would suit an individual. Certain specific characteristics should be kept in mind while deciding upon the diet to be followed
Characteristics of a good diet:
• It should be a balanced diet
• The diet should not require special supplements or dietary pills
• The diet should not leave out food groups
• The diets should be combined with exercise
• The diets should ensure that the dieter is healthy and can continue his normal work without feeling tired.
• The diet should allow weight loss at a gradual pace
Diets that work actually have the above mentioned criteria and allow the dieter to eat what they want at certain specific periods. This would ensure that the dieter does not get into binge eating and does not drop away from the diet.

Some of the important ones include:
1) The Every Other Day Diet- a balanced diet based on SNAPP
2) Glycemic index diet- basmati rice, bran, oats, certain fruits, pasta, chick peas, quinoa, plain yoghurt, skim milk
3) Macrobiotic diet- brown rice, soy bean produce, seeds and nuts in small amounts, fish also in small amounts
4) Organic diet- pesticide free fruits and vegetables, chicken , beef
5) Raw food diet- sushi, fruits, vegetables, nuts

7) Jenny Craig- cereal with skim milk,JC type pumpkin soup, JC type chicken, fruits and vegetables

10) The Zone- 40% carbohydrates, 30% fat, 30% proteins
