Different type of languages

Most everyone has heard of the most popular groups of languages that are referred to in every day conversation. The romantic languages, the Germanic languages, the Asian languages and Middle Eastern languages, among others are language groups that often are brought up in conversation, but the question still remains: how are these groups identified and what do they have in common that determine which languages belong to a particular group and which languages do not. Many language families (as they are referred to in many instances), are grouped together because they have a common ancestor language from which they are derived. In many cases, different languages that come from the same family will often have similar alphabets and many times, there will be similarities in grammar and vocabulary. One of the most active language families today is the Germanic language family. English, German, Dutch, Swedish and a variety of other languages from northern Europe are included in this group. Millions of people speak at least one of these languages today, if not as a native language, then as a second or third language. This family came from the Indo-European group of languages. Languages that came from the same ancestor language, such as German and English, for example are known as sister languages. Because of the similarities found in the sister languages of a language family are so similar, it is often easier for people to learn a sister language of their native tongue. What is fascinating about the study of language families is the effect that language origins have on the culture of a group of people. Language is essentially the cultural lens through which different groups see situations that can arise in everyday life. These situations are often interpreted differently by people who speak different languages, or by people who have a different native language. Many times, for this very reason, schools and universities who offer post graduate programs for language translation services , such as translation and interpretation often require that a person who is accepted into the program is to spend at least six months in a country that speaks the language that they wish to work in. The field of linguistics is a constantly evolving area of study that has already led to a more thorough understanding of the points of view of people from different groups. The job of a linguistic professional is a challenge because of the cultural aspect as well as the linguistic aspect that each project contains, and often by studying more than one language in a given language family, one can gain a more thorough understanding of the perspectives of people who are native speakers of that language.
