Different types of laminate flooring

Laminate was first developed sometime in the 1920s and it was originally meant to be used at tabletops. It is only in the 1970s that laminate flooring begun appearing and in the following few years the new style of flooring quickly gained popularity starting in Europe before it spread to the United States. Since laminate flooring is more affordable than hardwood flooring and it comes in different styles, sizes, and durability ratings, you can see why it continues to rage in popularity.

Laminate flooring is made of four layers of the top and bottom consisting of saturated cellulose paper mixed with melamine plastic resin. This coating is quite important because it gives the design of laminate flooring protection from scratches, burns, and scrapes in addition to being stain resistant. The decorative layer, that comes next, is made using cellulose paper that has a photo or a print that has the desired design; the core of laminate flooring is made of wood particles or dense fabric that has been specially treated to become waterproof.
Most laminate flooring materials are processed using a direct pressure method; all the four layers are assembled before they are heat pressed together to form a permanent bond. There have been developed newer high-pressure methods that can be used but they happen to be more costly and are used for high-end brands. When this new process is used, the bottom and top layer that contain the plastic resin are treated on their own before they get fused together with the core and decorative layers under high pressure.
Laminate flooring can be designed to imitate hardwood flooring or perhaps made to mimic stone or ceramic tiles. There are different colors and styles and well as plank sizes that may vary in length and width. Even though it is apparent that this type of flooring may not be real stone or hardwood, it provides homeowners on a budget with an attractive, economical and easy to maintain option that can be up to 15 times stronger than your traditional wooden floor. Maintenance of laminate flooring only requires wiping with a damp cloth with citrus cleaner or plain water mixed with ammonia or vinegar.
In the beginning, laminate flooring required close to 24 hours for drying before the house could be occupied. However, there are now brand new versions that come with a tongue and groove construction; this allows them to be slid together without any need for glue or nails. This new style is known as a floating floor which, even though it is easy to install, it can be quite noisy and will create echoes. You may want to mitigate this noise by installing a type of pad such as cork under the flooring.
