Diskitis or discitis mainly represents an inflammation that occurs in the vertebral disk area & is associated with infection. It can affect at any age, but mostly found in children under age 8. In most cases, this disorder appears after the spinal surgery & the rate of occurrence ranges from 1% to 2 %. Our vertebra consists of the spinal cord which features prominent bones that provide support for movement, sensation & its security.
- Types:
1. Septic discitis:
This occurs due to direct settlement of bacteria in the disk space. This kind is very rare & futher categorized according to hematogenous, post-operative & contagious types.
2. Infectious discitis:
This type relates with other indications like fever, extreme chills, appetite loss & many more. This symptom makes its presence due to specific microorganism on the vertebra.
3. Lumbar discitis:
This affects the lumbar region of the spinal cord, thus does not infect other discs in the body.
4. Osteomyelitis discitis:
This causes chronic or acute inflammation in the bones usually harmed by microorganisms in that region.
• Indications:
It includes excruciating pain in the back that makes it difficult to move & walk. This mainly happens after the spinal surgery, when the patient is having pain in the lower back & around the neck. Children usually refuse to walk & suffer from immense pain. If not treated at correct time, it can lead to osteomyelitis or even epidural abscess.
• Diagnosis:
It can be done using MRI scan, although can be diagnosed using X-rays & CT scan treatments. A biopsy treatment also proves beneficial for the diagnosis. In MRI scan, different air changes are revealed, especially epidural regions.
- Remedial measures:
A. Ample rest:
People suffering from this disorder require complete rest which stimulates quick recovery from the inflammatory process. The measures of immobilization provide the vertebrae ample time & space to amalgamate with other physical features of the body. If movement is required, doctors suggest you to incorporate brace or plaster cast which helps while making movements.
B. Treatments with antibiotics:
Patients need to be treated with specific antibiotics in order to fight against certain microorganisms that are responsible for causing discitis. Broad spectrum antibiotics help to treat organisms, but this is very rare.
