Vaginal candidiasis or yeast infection is caused by the overgrowth of Candida Albicans fungus in the vagina. Yeast or Candida is always present in the vagina in small amount without causing any problem but if there is an overgrowth, infection occurs. Common symptoms of yeast infection are the presence of cottage-cheese-like vaginal discharge, itching, burning sensation, painful urination and sometimes painful intercourse. Antifungal medicine comes in the form of creams that can be applied directly to the vagina, there are also tablets to be taken orally and there are suppositories for the vagina.
