An interesting fact about dogs is that they are omnivores. This means that they eat both meat and vegetables, and they thrive on such a diet. Cats, on the other hand, are carnivores, and they thrive on a heavily meat-based diet. So, dogs need both plants and protein meats to remain in tip top shape. Having an understanding of the best balanced diet for your pup means having a proper understanding of sources of protein for your dog. Here are a few sources of protein that will help you determine the best diet for your dog.

Poultry by-product meal is an excellent source of protein and nutrients for your pup, and it is often found in dry dog food. This source of protein is a by-product of either chicken or turkey processed poultry, and it surprisingly is comprised of about fifty-five to seventy percent protein. When this protein is combined with other corresponding protein sources, it supplies the perfect balance of the essential amino acids that meet the protein needs of you average healthy dog.

Just like humans, soy is another great source of protein for pets. Soy’s distinguishing attribute is the fact that it is nutritionally equivalent, if not superior, to proteins from other animals. In addition to being an excellent non-animal source of protein, soy also affords high levels of the amino acids that most contribute to your pet’s health. Again, soy alone will not care for all of your pet’s nutritional needs; but when it is linked with other proteins and amino acids that complement soy’s offerings, you will have a good diet for your pup. Also, soybean meal is more easily digestible than low-quality poultry, and it will aid in keeping your dog’s elimination habits regular as well.

When people hear the term “cereal grains” they don’t often immediately think of protein. Images of wheat and plants generally come to mind. But believe it or not, grains such as corn and wheat are excellent sources for the proper amino acids your dog needs when it is paired with soy meal or meat. When balancing a diet, it is important to know what nutrition each ingredient provides, and what it lacks. This way, you will be able to understand why certain products are often paired with others.

No matter what the source is for your dog’s protein—animal or plant, understand that your dog does need protein to thrive. Puppies tend to need more protein because they are growing, and they need the extra energy that protein provides. In the same way, elderly dogs need extra protein in their diet to help keep them strong, in addition to providing energy so they can keep up with their owner and other playmates.

Having a basic understanding of the top sources of protein for your dog will help you develop a balanced and healthy diet for your pet. It is always a good idea to ask your veterinarian what brand of doggie food they recommend for your pup as well, because they know what will be best for your dog. Giving your dog a healthy and balanced diet will help them stay strong and stay happy. What more could you ask for in a pet?
