If you are soft-spoken, there is a right way and a wrong way to increase your volume. Just speaking 'louder' is not the answer. In fact, the difficulty for those who speak softly is that when they do try to increase their volume, they think that they are shouting.

As a voice coach, I don’t teach people to speak loudly; I teach them to speak with a bigger voice. There is a big difference between the two. Loud hurts your throat and your listeners’ ears. A big voice is more volume but it is neither ‘painful’ for you or your listeners if it is produced properly.

Most people used their throat, vocal folds, mouth and nose to produce voiced sound; and, all four of these resonators are vital for speech. However, there is another resonator that the majority of the population is unaware of and not making use of. It is your chest cavity and it is responsible for the voices of Sean Connery, Kathleen Turner, James Earl Jones, and Diane Sawyer.

When you can make use of your chest, the largest and most vibrant of your 5 resonating cavities, you will discover that the volume of your voice will increase naturally. It will not be loud; just a bigger sound. And, unless you are very, very soft-spoken, it will automatically bring you up to what I refer to as Volume Level 1. This is the amount of sound most people use throughout their day – at the kitchen table, on the phone, in the car, or even at the sales counter in a store.

Not only will you notice an increase in your volume naturally when you use your chest cavity as your primary sounding board; but, you will also discover a richer, warmer, deeper and more mature sound. It’s a win-win situation all the way around.

The purpose of speaking is to communicate with others. If they cannot hear you, however, then you are not accomplishing your goal. You are not communicating. Whether it is for your personal or your professional life, being understood when you speak is a necessity. It could make the difference between a promotion, a new job, or even having your children listen to you.
