Oral hygiene is an important part of overall health, but many people are still reluctant to take a trip to the dentist. Reasons for postponing a much needed dental check up may vary, but eventually one will end up at the doorstep of a NC dentist. Luckily, continuing advancement in the field of dental science has created new and dynamic ways of treating patients who are filled with dread and anxiety about visiting the dentist.
Many dentists in NC now practice sedation dentistry. The idea of utilizing the calming effects of sedative drugs has revolutionized the way dentists treat their anxious or phobic patients. A sedation dentist prescribes sedative drugs to patients prior to performing an oral or dental procedure. This technique is meant to put the patient into a relaxed, almost sleep like state. It is often used for long and delicate procedures that require the patient to sit in the dental chair for a considerable amount of time. Sedation dentistry is also appropriate for those patients who have dental phobias or those who find it difficult to control or restrain their movements, such as small children.
There is some misinformation surrounding the practice of sedation dentistry. North Carolina residents often think that undergoing sedation dentistry requires the patient to be asleep or unconscious during the whole dental procedure but this is not the case. Most forms of sedation dentistry only put the patients in a sleep-like state, thereby calming their unsteady nerves. This simply relieves the patient of their anxieties so they may only have a very vague recollection of the procedure after it is done. The dentist will discuss the degrees and types of dental sedation to determine the sedation appropriate for each patient. The selection will be greatly dependent upon the treatment to be performed on the patient and the level of anxiety or stress exhibited by the person.
The options available to the patient range from the prescription of oral sedatives or nitrous oxide for moderate dental sedation to the use of intravenous drugs for a deeper dental sedation. Not all patients are candidates for sedation dentistry. A prudent dentist in NC will not advise a patient to choose dental sedation offhand. Only patients who exhibit extreme dental phobia, or those who have undergone a very traumatic dental experience in the past, are likely candidates for this type of procedure. The use of sedative drugs must be regulated because sedative drugs have a high potential for abuse. A reputable dentist will evaluate each patient individually and decide on the best course of action.
A number of people may have an irrational fear of going to the dentist. Some individuals do not look forward to a very lengthy dental procedure and will be reluctant to be subjected to such treatment. These kinds of concerns are no longer a hindrance in getting dental help now that sedation dentistry is available. With the guidance and advice of a trustworthy dentist, a dental visit should now be a pleasant experience.
