The Glasgow Pub has been a regular feature of this outstanding city for years and years now. In Glasgow the humble pub takes on a much more significant role than it does in other cities where its often viewed as jusy aplace to go and get drunk. These pubs weave into the very fabric of the city itself and many are popular landmarks in their own right. Some have achieved cult status and , even though the city elders might not like to admit it, they are as important to the heritage as its cathedrals, galleries and civic buildings. These simple locations have drawn folks from all walks of life - from the shipbuilders of the Clyde shipyards to the infamous Glasgow tobacco lords who, for several years, were some of the wealthiest and most important entrepreneurs on the planet. Bars such as Sloans, which is in the actual heart of the city have been established for over 3 hundred years, which makes them some of the earliest establishments in the city.

However, its not all recently been a bed of roses for Glasgow pub owners. Following World War 2, the city council set out on an intensive plan of redevelopment to try to clear the city of its famed tenements and provide far better quality housing for its populace. A large part of this urban redevelopment included destroying the well known tenements in locations such as the Gorbals and updating these with contemporary high rise apartments complete with such luxuries as inside toilets. Right this moment, however, the wave of new development also ate up many of the venerable old Glasgow drinking establishments, and sadly , many of them were lost forever in the name of progress. Places just like the New Era Bar in the Gorbals and the beautifully named Mucky Duck in Govan were, sadly lost and never replaced.

The Mucky Duck in Govan was just one of the many pubs that fell by the wayside, although, to this day, locals still remember with great devotion the antics of these old drinking holes.Given that beer drinking is practically a national hobby in some countries including Germany or the Czech Republic, its unexpected to find out that Glasgow has more pubs per head of population than either of these countries. The truth is, it was recently found that Glasgow has more pubs per head of population than every other city in Europe! Some areas still keep concentrations of pubs, especially the Gallowgate area which, inside the bare 2 miles which it runs betwee
Glasgow Cross and Parkhead, still has around 80 pubs from which to choose - amazing! If you value your pubs then its certainly the part of town for a night out.

About the Author

Despite quite a few new campaigns for example the smoking ban and blanket warnings on the health threats connected with alcohol consumption, the Glasgow pub still continues to flourish today, even though, typically in a modified format. Kid's play areas, beer gardens and, of course restaurant standard food at the moment are commonly found along with the more recognizable offerings of wine, beer and spirits. There are a growing variety of bars which are attempting to appeal to a wider audience by providing things like outdoor cookouts in summer, ceilidhs and , in the case of Sloans Bar in the heart of the city, regular film nights where you can watch a movie, eat a meal and have a drink. Its all far removed from the more common image of a Glasgow pub. Things may possibly have developed but Glasgow continues to be an excellent city that enjoys its pubs and the Glasgow Pub Scene displays no signs of quieting down in the near future.
