There have been a lot of suggestions to where or when the flower giving tradition has taken place or time. Many people think that it goes back just 3 centuries ago. Others emphasize that it's been going for a lot more than that. The most important thing though, is that why the flower giving tradition has survived despite the human cultural evolution which led to our existing material world. If flowers are considered probably the best gifts to give or receive for many people, it must be something which gives them their importance.

Many universities and research centers have made different studies of why flowers tend to make people happy. As most people think that flowers have benefits only for the receiver, many studies have shown that even the person who gives flowers receives as much health benefits as the receiver himself. Flowers are proven to improve our emotional health and trigger happiness. According to a study done at Rutgers, the state university of New Jersey, which the Society of American Florists participated in, flowers have these effects on people:

For the receiver:

1- Flowers trigger an instant smile to the receiver. All the participants in this study (with no exception) have shown an excitement accompanied with smiles upon receiving flowers. This shows us clearly that flowers have a great impact on people happiness. What the study also came with is that flowers have a great effect on moods. People within the study have felt less depressed and anxious and more enjoyment and satisfaction.

2- We all came to the conclusion that people are social beings. This study have also shown an increase in relationships level whether it's with family or friends.

For the giver:

1- The behavioral research has shown that people who give flowers tend to be more likable, enjoyable and more successful whether it's a man or a woman. They proved that people who give flowers live in harmony with nature and tend to appreciate beauty.

2- The comparison done between people who give flowers and people who give other type of gifts has clearly shown that the first type has more emotional intelligence than the second one. Flower givers expressed a good feeling of satisfaction and enjoyment.

So let's get back to our main question. Do flowers really make people happy? Well of course because not only this study have shown the effect of flowers on people mood, many other studies came out to the conclusion that flowers are emotionally great especially for patients, and that's why you find flower and rose bouquet in hospitals and not anything else.
