Do We Need Gradings in Martial Arts?

Many Martial Arts lessons have a built in grading process. This means that students earn a noticeable sign of advancement, typically a belt. Commonly, the grading is a tough test with pupils having to demonstrate a skill standard required to go up a stage.

The grading test is typically a particularly satisfying, but challenging, day, while some do fail, typically they shouldn't as they will not be put forward for the grading unless they are ready. Obviously, there's no point attempting your black belt if you're only a blue belt standard. You 'll be in over your head! Certain Martial Arts schools merely award a new grade to their students when the tutor believes they've obtained a suitable level. While students miss out on the grading day itself this method stops the clamor for a new belt that pupils will sometimes believe is due them.

Many people consider that by simply turning up and putting in time served they're due a new belt. This is probably fine for the McDojo's of the world but is abhorrent to a Martial Arts teacher who has your best interests at heart. At the end of the day a belt is just something to keep your uniform or gi tidy the color is worthless if it hasn't been received.

Martial Arts school makes it's pupils obtain their belts or not is to take a look at the standard of their black belts. Poor black belts mean the school doesn't place sufficient emphasis on technique and earning belts. On the other hand if they are of a good standard, the school has value and is worth a try, at the particularly least. Good black belt standard equals tough grading and high ability levels. Furthermore, there is clear evidence that the teacher is able to pass on something of value to them and so if you train tough he or she will be able to do the same for you. Not everyone is capable of passing on their ability to pupils and that holds true for ex-World Champions, winning does not always translate into teaching!

The grading system of good Martial Arts classes will have value, you will have to earn your belts but if the instructor is incompetent it will be all the more difficult to do so. But you need to take responsibility of yourself, you should prepare sufficiently for your gradings. Do not leave anything to chance, practice in and out of your school, so you're as well prepared as possible!
