One of the instrumental components of achieving individual professional success and organizational objectives is effective communication in the workplace. The development of effective communication skills in the workplace setting should become a priority for any individual looking to build sustainable work relationships and increase productivity, and any organization looking to maximize the return their vital human resources. From the perspective of the organizational workforce, the average time spent in a professional setting or workplace is eight hours per day. Many people forge lifelong relationships with the people they meet at work, and many studies have shown that interpersonal connections at work lead to increased happiness and productivity.

The benefits of becoming an effective communication in the workplace are many and diverse for both the organization and the workforce. The individual can build healthy and productive bonds with colleagues, which leads to a happier worker who looks forward to the work day. This often results in lower turnover and increased productivity. The organization must balance between an organizational culture that encourages interpersonal communication and friendliness, and being too loose and casual where too much time is spent around the water cooler or workers stretch the line of professionalism. The company can the adoption of effective communication skills by offering in-house training seminars or by disseminating a communication handbook to employees.

Effective communication in the workplace results in a;

* Greater trust and understanding between colleagues
* Employees feeling encouraged to express their opinions and insight in a safe environment
* Equal information-sharing between colleagues, where messages and vital knowledge are not hidden for personal reasons
* A developed understanding of unity towards a common goal

When colleagues develop effective communication in the workplace they can better transmit information between each other. While there is a growing list of technologies that support and enhance the workplace communication process, at the end of the day those individuals wielding the technology must have the ability to send a message with coherent meaning. This requires the development of effective communication skills, where colleagues focus on actively listening to one another, using common terminology, and respecting the appropriate communication channel given the subject or intended meaning.
