Do You Have Any Idea How Old Your Plumbing Is?

Most people go about their daily routine without ever stopping to think about how some things work. You flick a switch and you have light, you turn on your kettle and you have hot water. You turn on the faucet and you get water. These are all modern conveniences that we've probably taken very much for granted over the last century or so. It wasn't that long ago that flushing toilets and electricity were exclusively for the extremely rich and the same applies to indoor plumbing. In fact if you look at most of the poorer countries around the world at the moment their biggest problem is getting fresh water for drinking and washing each day.

So now that we have well over a century of indoor plumbing in our major cities which also means that the plumbing in most modern cities is now badly in need of repair. If you look at the United Kingdom and France and cities like London and Paris there are parts of each of these cities which have plumbing which is several hundred years old and is constantly having to be worked on. The reason why the plumbing in older cities is in a constant state of repair is that the population density for most of these cities has increased dramatically and the older plumbing systems are literally crumbling under the pressure of handling the additional waste needs.

The truth is that you probably have absolutely no idea how old the plumbing in your home or building is and if you did you'd probably freak out a little bit. Landlords, owners and tenants all tend to leave plumbing alone unless it needs to be fixed and only then will they attempt to do anything to fix it - this is a case of "ignorance is bliss" and economy of effort and cash too. So regardless of the fact that the plumbing in your home is probably older than your great grandparents you'll probably never be aware of this until some aspect of it just fails completely.

If you've just bought an older property and intend renovating it then make sure you check all of the plumbing before you go digging any of it up because the change you might make in one room could completely overload the plumbing for the entire house. Or the other problem you might run into is that the entire plumbing system needs to be replaced but again this isn't something you realize until you've taken up the floorboards or floors and are suddenly faced with plumbing pipes that are over 100 years old and all it will take is one mistake for those pipes to crumble in front of you.

Most city councils are doing their best to upgrade public plumbing to stop water wastage and other problems but the plumbing on your property is generally going to be a problem you have to deal with yourself.
