Chiropractors are doctors that manipulate your neuromusculoskeletal system. They diagnose your ailments on the basis that your spine may be in an improper alignment and is causing you a variety of problems. They apply light pressure to adjust problem areas, effectively decompressing the nerves that were squeezed by your misaligned bones.
To become a chiropractor, one typically needs up to 6-8 years of post high school study. That would break down to two to four years of undergraduate education and another four at a doctor of chiropractic program (D.C.). Prerequisites to getting in to a program for chiropractic include a GPA of 3.0 to 4.0 and depending on the school, you need to have the following subjects too, such as anatomy, biology, chemistry, nutrition, physics, and statistics just to name a few. The Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE) sets these requirements but some states may include additional terms to become a chiropractor.
To be a practicing chiropractor, you must be licensed in the state you are practicing. For most states, you need to pass four out of five tests from the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE). Once licensed, chiropractors need up to 12 to 50 hours of continuing eduction per year. Also, you can obtain postdoctoral training and specialize in different areas such as chiropractic neurology, sports medicine, pediatrics, nutrition, rehabilitation, and radiology.
Chiropractors are mostly self-employed. There are those though that are employed by other chiropractors or practice with other chiropractors at a hospital. The average pay for an employed chiropractor is $67,200 per year. Moreover, there is a great outlook for employment.
Because of the growing need for alternative health care, chiropractic is expected to grow in the years to come. According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of chiropractors is expected to grow by 28% up until the year 2020, more than the average employment rate for most occupations.
Am I getting you riled up to become the next big chiropractor? Well, fret not my friend, you do not need Hulk-level strength to be a chiropractor. What you need is a good eye to locate the problems of your patient. You need to be a good communicator to understand and retrieve the information you need.
