Do Your Emotions Control You Or Are You Emotionally Disconnected?

For some people, it is a challenge for them to handle how they feel. As a result of this, it can be normal for someone like this to be overwhelmed by their emotional self and to lose their ability to think clearly.

This could be how they have been for as long as they can remember. If this is so, they may believe that this is just how their life is and there is absolutely nothing that they can do about it.

Another Scenario

For others, it can be a challenge for them to connect with how they feel. Consequently, someone like this probably won’t have trouble thinking clearly but what they will struggle with is being aware of how they feel.

Once again, this could be how their life has been for as long as they can remember. If this is the case, they could believe that this is just how their life is and there is nothing that they can do about it.

Emotional

When it comes to the first experience, someone is likely to spend a lot of time being connected to how they feel. The downside is that even though they will be connected, they are not going to be emotionally intelligent.

For them to be able to describe how they feel and to use the information that their emotional self provides, they would need to be less caught up in how they feel. One would then be aware of how they feel, but they would rarely be taken out by this part of them.

Emotionless

When it comes to the second experience, someone is likely to spend a lot of time in their head. The problem with this is that even though they won’t be overwhelmed by how they feel during these moments, they won’t be aware of how they feel either.

Information that would be supplied by their emotional self is then going to be out of their reach. It will be hard for them to know what their needs are and it can be hard for them to form close relationships with others.

One Perspective

Taking into account how each of these two people experience life, it is clear that their life could be a lot better if they were to either gain control of how they feel or to develop a stronger connection to how they feel.

If one needs to gain control of how they feel and to no longer allow this part of their being to control them, they may have some emotional work to do. On the other hand, if one needs to develop a better connection with how they feel, they may need to do the same thing.

The Reason

What this comes down to is that if someone has experienced trauma, they can go one of two ways. Either they can have the tendency to be emotionally all at sea or to be emotionally shutting down.

If someone spends a lot of time feeling emotionally unstable, their pain won’t be hidden and this will allow them to work through it. Yet, if one is often emotionally shut down, it can take a while for them to connect to this pain.

The assistance of a therapist or a healer may be needed here.

While I was waiting for my dance class to start, I watched an instructor patiently coach a couple through what was obviously one of their first lessons. Each half box has three steps: a step forward or backward, a step to the side, and a step to close the feet together. The instructor was counting out
